HISTORY - DIVISION IX 2 EASTERN DISTRICT USCG AUX

Division IX of the Second Eastern District of the United States (Coast Guard Auxiliary was established on 13 December 1975 as the result of action by District Commodore E. C. Harry, Director of Auxiliary, Lt. F. Nettle, and the EX COM seated at that time. Since Division IX was established with flotillas that were a part of Division VII, same opposition to the Division split developed. However, at a meeting held at the Holiday Inn in Butler, PA at 1400 hours on 21 December 1975, officers for Division IX were elected, and on 10 January 1976 Division IX was chartered at the Change of Watch in the Holiday House, Monroeville, PA.
 

At the time Division IX was chartered there were six flotillas:

9-1 Elizabeth, PA
9-2 McKeesport, PA
9-3 Irwin, PA
9-4 Steubenville, OH
9-5 Youghiogheny Dam, PA.
9-6 SOUTH HILLS, PA.
 

The first Division Captain was George H. Bachmann, J. Robert Munden served as Vice Captain during 1976. The first division board members were:

Division IX hosted its first regional conference in the fall of 1977 at the Holiday Inn in Greentree, PA Division IX suffered the loss of two flotillas (9-4 and 9-5) in November of 1977.

In the fall of 1983 Flotilla 9-9 was chartered with Henry Shifflett FC and James J. Mackey FVC. Our meeting place moved from the Good Samaritan Church in Liberty Boro to the the Belmont Village also in Liberty Boro. Early in 1983 a decision to combine Divisions VII and IX came down form the Commanding Officer in St. Louis. In response to the directive a committee composed of Norman Rosenfeld RCO-E James T. Miller DSO/GR Joseph Lanz DCP-VII Virgil Wagner PDCO-2ER J. Robert Munden DCP-IX was convened at St. Clairsville, OH to discuss the proposed merger of the two divisions. It was the unanimous decision of the committee that the well-being of the Auxiliary would be best served by having the two divisions remain as separate entities.
